A Poem - Goals

GOALS by Sophie Cousens

I just want to be a writer,

I’ll be happy if I write a book.

I just want to be a writer,

I’ll be grateful if an agent takes a look.

I just want to be a writer.

I’ll be thrilled to even get published.

I just want to be a writer,

As long as it doesn’t get rubbished.

Of course I’d like it to do well

I’ll be so happy if it sells...

Enough to get me a new deal

Enough to make the charts

Enough to repay

My publisher’s advance.

I just want to be a writer

I’ll be grateful for a few good reviews

Mainly good reviews...

ALL good reviews.

I just want to be a writer

With rights sold abroad

I just want to be a writer

With books that aren’t ignored.

I just want to be a writer

A New York Times bestseller

I just want to be a writer

With my picture in the Bookseller

I only ask for a fifty book deal

Lobster and champagne at every meal

Movie rights, world rights,

My name up in Hollywood lights...

I JUST want to be a writer.
